Gold Coast Montessori
The Montessori educational approach emphasizes self discovery and a connection with the natural world. Students are free to explore the classroom, experimenting on their own or engaging other children based on how they feel. Mixed age classrooms encourage children to teach one another.
The school is organized around an L-shaped concrete wall, which divides the building in two. Classrooms are placed on the south and west sides of the wall, and open to an outdoor garden space atop the first floor roof. Each classroom contains group and private learning spaces, which encourage children to sample different learning environments.
To the north and east of the walls are the building's public areas and circulation. Each contain areas for communal gatherings outside of the classroom. Cuts in the floors and ceilings connect these spaces visually and acoustically. Year round indoor gardens contrast the main outdoor garden space, which lives and dies as the seasons change.
